Augusta, GA (November 16, 2018) – On Thursday, November 15, 2018, at approximately 8:11 PM, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office was called to the Residence Inn on Marks Church Road in Augusta regarding a trouble with subject call. Richmond County Sheriff’s Deputy Stephan Psillos responded to the location and encountered Jack Darrel Fields Jr, 25, of El Paso, Texas, in the lobby of the hotel. During the encounter, Deputy Psillos attempted to place handcuffs on Fields at which time Fields resisted arrest. Fields pulled a knife from his coat pocket and attacked Deputy Psillos stabbing him multiple times. Deputy Psillos fired his service weapon striking Fields.

Deputy Psillos was transported to Augusta University Medical Center where he is being treated for his injuries. Members of the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office performed first aid on Fields however Fields was pronounced dead at the scene.

The GBI was called to assist with the investigation and continues to investigate the incident. Fields’ body was transported to the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur for an autopsy which was scheduled for Friday, November 16th.

Deputy Psillos has been employed with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office since July of 2017 and is assigned to the Road Patrol.

Once the GBI completes the investigation it will be turned over to the Augusta Judicial Circuit District Attorney for review.
