Jackson, Georgia – On Friday, February 24, 2017, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was requested by the Butts County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) to conduct an officer involved use of force investigation.

Preliminary information from Butts County authorities indicates that at approximately 5:00 a.m. this date, BCSO executed a search warrant at 231 Keys Ferry Road. The search warrant was for violation of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act. While serving the search warrant, deputies encountered Douglas Roger Tanner, Sr., 53, who lived at the residence.  A physical altercation ensued which resulted in Tanner being tasered by a deputy. Tanner subsequently showed signs of physical distress and was taken to Sylvan Grove Hospital where he later died.  An autopsy will be conducted at the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur.

Chad Hoek, 39, who was the primary resident of 231 Keys Ferry Road, was arrested by BCSO and charged with two counts of sale of methamphetamine.

A minor child was also present at the time of the search warrant.  The child was unharmed and later turned over to family members.

No officers were injured during the incident.

The GBI will continue its independent investigation to determine what occurred during the incident.  When the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Butts County District Attorney.
