Atlanta, Georgia – On Thursday, January 26, 2017, the Atlanta Police Department requested the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) to investigate an officer involved shooting in Atlanta, Georgia.                                

Preliminary information provided by Atlanta authorities indicates that on Thursday, January 26, 2017, at approximately 7:45 PM, two APD detectives in plain clothes encountered a male in a parked vehicle at the Atlanta Public Safety Annex parking lot located on Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway NW, Atlanta, GA.  After initial contact with the individual, the male exited the vehicle.  During the conversation, the male lunged back into the vehicle and attempted to flee.  One of the APD detectives was partially in the passenger side of the vehicle.  The vehicle fled with the detective halfway in the vehicle.  The detective fired his gun, striking the male.  The male was pronounced dead on the scene by EMS personnel. 

An autopsy will be conducted by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office.

No officers were injured during this incident.

The GBI will continue its independent investigation to determine what occurred during the incident.  When the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Fulton County District Attorney's Office for review.
