Cartersville, Georgia – On Friday July 1, 2016, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested to investigate an officer involved shooting that occurred during the apprehension and arrest of a fugitive wanted for aggravated assault and parole violation.

Preliminary information indicates that on Friday July 1, 2016, at approximately 6:20 PM, Cartersville Police Officers and Bartow County Sheriff’s Deputies arrived at 11 Parmenter Street in Cartersville to arrest Steven McQueen, age 30, for a probation violation warrant and an aggravated assault warrant. The aggravated assault warrant was sworn out last night by a Carterville Officer who had attempted to arrest McQueen last night.  McQueen had reportedly pointed a gun at the officer and escaped arrest.

As officers and deputies arrived at the residence they evacuated the occupants from the home and entered in pursuit of McQueen. Deputies and officers made contact with McQueen who was armed with a handgun.  Deputies and officers repeatedly commanded McQueen to put down the gun. A Taser was fired at McQueen but was ineffective in subduing him.  McQueen pointed his handgun at the officers and deputies, at which point a deputy and an officer fired at McQueen striking and killing him.  Medical assistance was called to the scene; however, McQueen had expired.

An autopsy of McQueen will be performed by the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office in Decatur, GA.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation to determine what occurred during the incident. When the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the District Attorney’s Office for review.
